What makes a good film re-make?

Most remakes fail because the makers want to capitalise greedily on a past successful formula and then make a vastly inferior film.

I believe a 50 year moratorium shouuld be set up - banning any reboots/re-imaginings/remakes for at least that length of time.

However if a film-maker wants to pick a total flop, address the flaws, and re-do it into a better story, then I say let them prove their worth.
