I have got absolutely no interest in the football World Cup, or most ‘professional’ sports competitions for that matter. I used to play a lot of sport at a high level in my dim and distant past, and found that many people who played sport at that level tended not to actually be interested in sports/competitions they were not competing in. I think these competitions are televised purely for the revenue they bring in to the advertisers and TV companies, which in turn allows overweight wannabes or those of the ‘almost made it but for my bad ankle’ brigade to wax lyrical about all the ‘stats’ they know about certain teams or players and thus ‘impress’ their mates down the pub.
By all means go out, have a few beers and enjoy yourselves watching the competition, but this is definitely not one for me. I doubt I will see a single match even though my son will watch as many as he is able - for me, there are many more things I’d rather be doing with my time and money.
