This time round we asked you your opinion on the American tradition of Halloween (or 'All Hallows Eve') As always you did not disappoint. There was little love for the tradition of 'trick or treating' as evident in the comments below. Here are just a few of your rants:
In favour of Halloween celebrations:
"I LOVE halloween!!! It's great to make the pumpkin lanterns for the windows, light candles and buy the sweets in for the local kids when they come trick or treating. Celebrate all things spooky and watch most haunted haha!"
"I think it is good fun for children and people should just chill out. I was brought up as a child in the States and have fond memories of this event."
"It's a good excuse for everyone to dress up and feel different for the night. I think with the current climate holidays like halloween are more important now than ever for bringing some light hearted comic relief."
Not in favour of Halloween celebrations:
"60 years of the welfare state and still we have children begging door to door. I look forward to the imminent reintroduction of workhouses."
"It's all good fun until you run out of treats and the little darlings returning for the 3rd time that night, in the hope you don't remember their rubbish jokes, egg your house in protest at their unrequited greed."
"I love Halloween but hate trick or treat. All they want is sweets, they're not scaring you, or singing to you, or charming you - they're just grabbing sweets then going to the next house and then going home to be sick."
"I prefer the scottish tradition, where you have to perform a skit or song to get anything."
"It should stay in the USA! There is no need for every American tradition to become part of the fabric of British life. I do not celebrate halloween nor do I respond to any trick or treaters who disturb me during that evening."
"Glorified begging and a paedos paradise."
"Hate it. Over commericialised - I've even seen 'Halloween' beer."
"Trick or treaters tend to be around 16 years old and hang around corners nowadays. Not the innocent little night that it used to be..."
