CINEMA

We asked Urban Lifers how often you go to the cinema these days. In total, 4% go once a week or more, 14% go 2-3 times a month, 22% go once a month and 29% once every 2-3 months.

Which of the following top 10 box office hits from 2005 did you go to see at the cinema?
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 40%
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 39%
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 35%
Chronicles of Narnia: Lion, Witch & Wardrobe 32%
War of the Worlds 32%
Meet The Fockers 26%
Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit 23%
Hitch 18%
Madagascar 15%
Nanny McPhee 5%

18% of you had been to the cinema in the past week, with Saturday the most popular day for attendance (31%) followed by Wednesday (24% - perhaps in part down to "Orange Wednesdays"?) and then Sunday (21%). Thursday was the least likely night to go to the cinema (10%).

We then asked "when you go and see a film at the cinema, how often do you arrive after the advertised start time so that you skip seeing some of the adverts or trailers?". 27% said "never", 32% said "hardly ever", 27% said "sometimes" and 14% said "most of the time" or "always".

So for the majority, the adverts and trailers preceding the movie are an integral part of the whole cinema-going experience.

CDs & DVDs

CD/DVDWe asked how many CDs and DVDs you'd bought in the last month. The mean number of CDs was 1.8 (2 for men and 1.5 for women) and the mean number of DVDs was 1.9 (2.3 for men and 1.4 for women). This equates to approximately £17M in CDs and £24.5M DVDs being bought by Urbanites every single month. (There are 860,000 Metro-reading Urbanites in the UK according to the latest NRS, which we have multiplied by an average spend figure).

In terms of where you purchased them in the last 3 months, the top buying method for CDs and DVDs was online: 48% had bought CDs and 47% had bought DVDs online. However, "bricks and mortar" retailers are still an important channe, with 43% of you buying CDs and 36% buying DVDs through a high street music store like HMV or Virgin.

15% said that around once a month you bought a music CD in the week that it is released, while 13% typically buy a movie DVD in the week of its release on a monthly basis.

BRITS 2006

The 2006 Brit Awards took place on 15th February so we asked which of the shortlisted acts would win your vote if you were on the judging panel. For the Best British Album category it was pretty neck-and-neck between albums from the Kaiser Chiefs 21% and Gorillaz (23%),. However, the actual winner on the night was Coldplay for X&ampY. In terms of the Best British Group category, Coldplay narrowly pipped the Kaiser Chiefs by 1% and Gorrillaz by 3% with Urban Lifers, but on the actual night the Kaiser Chiefs triumphed.

STAG & HENS

A hen night We asked across urban Britain which UK city you thought would be the best place to host a hen or a stag party.

And the winner was London, closely followed by Newcastle, Edinburgh and Brighton. If you analysed this in relation to the number of respondents we have in each city, then Newcastle was a clear leader.
